Installing Cast Iron Radiators: Tips for Safe and Successful Installation

Installing a cast iron radiator is different from installing a lightweight panel radiator—but it’s straightforward if approached correctly. Whether you're working with a new build or retrofitting into a period property, here are the key considerations.

1. Weight & Handling: Cast iron radiators are heavy. Always plan for a two-person lift. For large radiators, delivery is often kerbside only, so ensure there's help to move them into position safely.

2. Floor Strength: Most floors easily support cast iron radiators, but in older properties or upper floors with timber joists, check their integrity. Use spreader plates or cast iron feet for additional support.

3. Wall Brackets or Feet: Wall stays are often recommended to prevent tipping. For tall models or narrow-column styles, fixing to the wall ensures stability.

4. Pipe Centres: Unlike many modern radiators, the sectioned design of cast iron radiators allows for customizable lengths. Pipe centres depend on radiator width, so always measure the final assembled product before fitting plumbing.

5. Bleeding and Commissioning: After installation, radiators must be bled of air. Use a bleed key at the top of each unit. Once filled and pressure-tested, your radiator is ready to deliver timeless warmth.

Professional installers used to modern systems should have no trouble fitting cast iron radiators—but don’t be afraid to ask your supplier for guidance.
