How to Prepare Your Cast Iron Radiators for Winter

A few simple checks now can keep your home warm and your heating system working efficiently throughout the colder months.

As the days grow shorter and temperatures begin to fall, it is worth checking that your heating system is ready. Cast iron radiators are known for their excellent heat retention and long working life, but a little seasonal maintenance helps them perform at their best.

Turn your heating on before you need it

Test your heating system before the cold weather properly arrives. Turn it on for an hour or two and check that every radiator warms up as expected.

Remember that cast iron radiators take longer to warm up than lightweight modern radiators. Once hot, the dense cast iron retains heat exceptionally well and continues releasing warmth after the heating has been switched off.

Bleed radiators that are cold at the top

If a radiator is warm at the bottom but cold at the top, trapped air may be preventing hot water from circulating throughout it. Switch off the heating and allow the system to cool before carefully bleeding the radiator.

Give your radiator room to work. Furniture positioned too closely can restrict airflow and prevent heat from circulating effectively.

 

 

 

 

 

Check valves, leaks and signs of corrosion

Turn each radiator valve gently to make sure it moves freely, then look for moisture or staining around the valves, bleed point, pipe connections and between the radiator sections. Small leaks should be investigated promptly.

Clean between the sections

Use a long radiator brush or vacuum attachment to remove dust from between the columns and around the back. Avoid abrasive cleaning products that could damage the painted or metallic finish.
